In simple terms, genetic deletions in a specific region of the X chromosome (Xp22.31) can cause problems with mood and memory. People with these deletions might struggle with memory-related tasks and feel less confident in their abilities, but their brain structure related to memory doesn't change much.

These genetic changes could also affect the development and function of a brain structure called the globus pallidus, which in turn may influence how the brain develops and the likelihood of developing certain mental health conditions.

Interestingly, using certain drugs to enhance memory, as suggested by studies in animals, might not be helpful and could even be harmful for people with these genetic deletions.

To understand these effects better, future research should focus on studying people with these deletions as well as using model systems to explore the biological reasons behind the changes in mood and memory.
