My entire life has been a struggle.  I knew I had epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI) from birth. I was given up for adoption as a baby and was raised by a very loving mother. Elementary school was the most challenging. Kids can be very cruel, but I was raised in a very religious home with lots of love. I had chicken pox three times. My house became the chicken pox party hub in the 80s and early 90s. I did make it through school and graduated a Texas scholar in 1999. The following November my mother passed away and three weeks later I learned I was pregnant with my oldest. I have two children now ages 20 and 17. I can honestly say if it weren't for some of the friendships I made throughout the years from people I met at the conferences, I wouldn't be who I am today.

How has FIRST impacted your life?

FIRST gave me a sense of belonging. My kids call everyone they meet aunt, uncle or cousin. We have family all over the world and it's nice to feel loved and wanted especially from others that truly understand what you go through day in and day out with ichthyosis.
